Garden Fleece (30gsm Winter Protection)

A 1.6m x 8m roll of lightweight 30gsm fleece, enough to wrap several tender plants, cover a bed, or protect a row of young shrubs through a cold snap.

Traps a layer of warmer air next to the plant, typically giving a few degrees of frost protection, without excluding the light and rain the plant still needs.

Far lighter than netting or shade cloth, this is a non-woven fleece, so it drapes softly over foliage without crushing delicate growth.

Reusable across multiple frosty nights and seasons if taken off during the day and stored dry between uses.

Cuts easily to size, whether that is a small sleeve for one pot or a full-width cover for a raised bed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much frost protection does fleece actually give?

A layer of 30gsm fleece typically gives a few degrees of frost protection by trapping a layer of warmer air around the plant; it protects against light-to-moderate frost rather than a hard, prolonged freeze.

Does light and rain still get through the fleece?

Yes, fleece is a light, breathable, non-woven fabric that still lets rain and a good amount of light through, so plants can stay covered for extended periods without being starved of either.

Can I leave it on plants for weeks at a time?

Yes, unlike a solid cover, fleece is generally fine left in place for extended periods through winter, though checking on plants periodically and removing it on milder days is still good practice.

Will it damage delicate new growth?

No, fleece is soft and lightweight, draping gently over foliage rather than pressing down on it the way heavier materials can.

How do I fix it in place?

Pegs, clips, or simply weighting the edges with stones, bricks or soil all work well to stop the fleece blowing off in wind.

Is this the same as shade cloth or insect mesh?

No, fleece is a different, non-woven material designed for warmth and frost protection, unlike shade cloth (light control) or insect mesh (pest exclusion), and it should not be confused with either.

Can I reuse the fleece next winter?

Yes, if it is handled carefully, dried before storage and kept out of prolonged sun when not in use, a fleece roll like this can be reused across several winters.

Will fleece protect plants from a hard, prolonged freeze?

It gives useful protection against light and moderate frost, but for a hard or prolonged freeze, additional protection such as moving pots undercover is more reliable.

Can I cut this to make individual plant covers?

Yes, it cuts easily with scissors, and you can gather and tie the fabric around individual pots or small shrubs, or lay a full-width sheet over a bed.

Using Garden Fleece Through Winter

3 min read ShadeGuard Netting

Fleece is the simplest and cheapest way to get tender plants through a cold snap, but it works best used the right way.

What fleece actually does

Horticultural fleece is a light, non-woven fabric that traps a thin layer of warmer air around the plant it covers. That buffer typically raises the temperature immediately around the plant by a few degrees compared to open air, enough to make the difference between frost damage and a plant that comes through a cold night unharmed.

When to use it

Fleece earns its keep on tender or borderline-hardy plants, young shrubs still establishing, and anything recently potted on or planted out that has not yet built up cold tolerance. It is not generally needed on fully hardy, established plants, which cope with normal UK winter temperatures without help.

How to fit it

Drape the fleece loosely over the plant rather than pulling it tight, leaving room for the trapped air layer to actually form. Peg, clip or weight the edges down so wind cannot get underneath and lift it off overnight, which is when the protection matters most.

Leaving it on vs taking it off

Because fleece still lets light and rain through, it is generally fine to leave in place for extended cold spells rather than removing it every morning. That said, checking on covered plants periodically and lifting the fleece on any milder, sunny days avoids the plant getting too warm and encourages good airflow.

Getting more than one winter out of a roll

Fleece is inexpensive but not indestructible. Taking it down between cold snaps, letting it dry fully, and storing it away from direct sun will get you several winters of use from one roll rather than replacing it every year.
