Garden Insect Mesh Netting

A generous 3m x 15m roll of ultra-fine mesh, sized to cover a whole veg patch, several rows or a run of beds in one continuous piece.

The tight weave is fine enough to keep out carrot fly, cabbage white butterflies, aphids and similar flying pests, as well as birds and cats, without needing pesticides.

Despite the fine weave, light, air and rain still pass through freely, so plants underneath grow normally rather than being starved of light or waterlogged from trapped moisture.

UV-stabilised material is built to stay outdoors for a full growing season without the sun damage that weakens cheaper mesh within weeks.

A large roll like this is easy to cut down to size for smaller beds, so one roll can cover several different crops through the season.

Frequently Asked Questions

What pests does this mesh keep out?

The fine weave is designed to exclude flying insect pests such as carrot fly, cabbage white butterflies and aphids, as well as birds and cats, while still letting light and air through.

Will plants still get enough light under the mesh?

Yes, insect mesh is woven far more openly than a shading cloth, so it is designed to let the great majority of light through while stopping pests getting in.

Does rain get through the mesh?

Yes, rain passes through an insect mesh cover normally, so you do not need to remove it for watering unless you are hand-watering underneath.

How do I support the mesh over my plants?

Hoops, canes or a simple frame work well to keep the mesh off the leaves, with the edges pegged, buried or weighted down so pests cannot walk in underneath.

Can I use this over brassicas to stop cabbage white butterflies?

Yes, this is one of the most common uses; keeping the mesh on from planting through to harvest stops the butterflies laying eggs on the leaves in the first place.

Is 3m x 15m too much for a small garden?

It is sized for a full veg patch or several beds; it cuts down easily with scissors if you only need to cover a smaller area, and the offcut can be reused elsewhere.

Does the mesh need to touch the plants, or should it be held above them?

It is best held slightly above the plants on hoops or a frame so growth is not restricted and pests cannot reach leaves pressed against the mesh.

Will it stop pollinating insects reaching flowering crops?

Yes, an insect mesh fine enough to exclude small pests will also exclude pollinators, so it is best removed once a crop is flowering and needs pollination, or used on crops that do not need insect pollination.

Can this mesh double as bird netting?

Yes, the weave is fine enough to also keep birds off soft fruit and seedlings, in addition to its main job of excluding insects.

How long will it last outdoors?

UV-stabilised mesh like this typically lasts multiple seasons of outdoor use, longer again if taken down and stored dry over winter.

Insect Mesh vs Shade Cloth: Which Do You Need?

4 min read ShadeGuard Netting

Shade cloth and insect mesh look similar rolled up but do very different jobs, and it pays to know which one you actually need before you buy.

What shade cloth does

Shade cloth is woven or knitted to block a set percentage of sunlight, anywhere from a light 30% through to a heavy 90%. Its job is temperature and light control: keeping a greenhouse from overheating, protecting sun-sensitive plants, or shading a patio. It does nothing to keep pests out, since the weave is designed around light, not pest size.

What insect mesh does

Insect mesh is woven far more tightly at a consistent, small hole size, fine enough to physically stop flying pests such as carrot fly and cabbage white butterflies getting through, while barely reducing the light reaching your plants. Its job is pest exclusion, not shading. Used correctly it removes the need for pesticide sprays on the crops it covers.

Can you use both together?

Yes, on some beds it makes sense to run both: an insect mesh cover during the pest-risk part of the season, and separate shade cloth over a greenhouse roof for temperature control. They solve different problems and are not really interchangeable, so check which issue you are actually trying to fix before choosing one over the other.

Choosing between the two

If your main problem is pests eating or laying eggs on your crop, insect mesh is what you need. If your main problem is a greenhouse or bed overheating in full sun, shade cloth at the right percentage for your crop is the better tool. Many growers end up with both in the shed for different jobs through the season.
