Garden Netting Kit: Heavy Duty Bird Netting

A complete kit covering 2.3m x 20m of ground, enough for a full fruit cage, veg row or pond, with a fine 15x15mm mesh that keeps birds, cats and larger pests off your crop.

10 stakes are included to peg the netting down at the edges, plus 50 zip ties to fix it to a frame, canes or fruit cage, so you are not hunting for extra hardware.

The black weave is close enough to stop birds getting tangled or pecking through, while still letting rain, light and pollinating insects reach the plants underneath.

UV-stabilised polyethylene resists the sun damage that turns cheaper netting brittle and prone to tearing after one season.

Cuts easily to size if you only need to cover part of the roll, so one kit can do a fruit cage this year and a different bed next.

Frequently Asked Questions

What will this netting keep out?

The 15x15mm mesh is fine enough to stop birds such as pigeons and blackbirds, and also helps deter cats and larger pests, from reaching fruit, vegetables or pond fish.

Is it safe for birds, so they will not get tangled?

The mesh is tightly woven rather than loose strand netting, which greatly reduces the tangling risk that loose bird netting can cause, but always check and remove any wildlife promptly if it does happen, and take the netting down when not needed.

What is included in the kit?

The roll of 2.3m x 20m netting, 10 ground stakes for pegging the edges, and 50 zip ties for fixing to a frame, canes or existing structure.

Can I use it over a pond?

Yes, it is a popular choice for pond netting to keep herons and cats away from fish, staked or weighted at the edges so it sits clear of the water surface.

Will it cover a full fruit cage?

At 2.3m x 20m it will cover a large fruit cage or several smaller beds; measure your frame first and cut the roll to size rather than trying to stretch a short piece.

How do I stop birds getting underneath at the edges?

Peg the edges down firmly with the included stakes, or bury the edge in a shallow trench, so there is no gap for birds or pests to walk in underneath.

Does bees and other pollinators still reach the flowers?

The 15x15mm mesh is loose enough for bees and most pollinating insects to pass through while still stopping birds, though very large flying insects may occasionally be excluded.

How do I attach it to a fruit cage frame?

Use the included zip ties at regular intervals along the frame, roughly every 30-40cm, pulling the netting taut so it does not sag or catch in the wind.

Can it be reused next season?

Yes, taken down carefully and stored dry it can be reused for several seasons; check it each year for any holes or worn ties before putting it back up.

Is it heavy enough not to blow around?

The netting itself is lightweight by design (that is what lets air and light through), so pegging and tying it securely at every edge, as included, is what keeps it in place in wind rather than the weight of the mesh.

Will the black colour show against my plants?

Black mesh tends to visually disappear at a short distance once it is draped over a frame or cage, more so than lighter colours which can look more obvious.

Bird Netting: Protecting Your Crop Without Harming Wildlife

Garden netting comes in a lot of different weights, weaves and colours, and it is easy to buy the wrong one for the job. Here is what actually matters when you are choosing bird netting for keeping birds and pests off fruit, veg and ponds.

Start with the job, not the product

Before comparing rolls, be clear on what you actually need solved: shading from sun, exclusion of pests, privacy from neighbours, or wind reduction. Many nets do more than one of these to some degree, but they are usually optimised for one job in particular, and buying on that basis avoids disappointment later.

What this product is built for

This is a fine, tightly-woven black mesh, chosen for keeping birds and pests off fruit, veg and ponds. It is not a substitute for a purpose-built shade cloth if heavy sun protection is your main concern, or a dedicated insect mesh if pest exclusion is the priority, but for its intended use it strikes a sensible balance of durability, cost and coverage.

Sizing it correctly

Measure the area you actually need to cover, including a reasonable overlap at the edges for fixing down, before ordering. It is almost always easier to trim a slightly larger net down to size than to try to stretch a too-small piece across a gap.

Fixing it so it lasts

Whatever you are covering, the fixing points are usually where garden netting fails first, from repeated strain, flapping in wind, or UV weakening at a stress point. Space fixings evenly, keep reasonable tension rather than pulling it bar-tight, and check ties periodically through the season.

Getting more than one season out of it

Taking netting down when it is not needed, letting it dry fully, and storing it out of direct sunlight will noticeably extend how many seasons you get from a single roll, regardless of which type you choose.
