80% Sunblock Shade Cloth

An 80% sunblock shade cloth panel sized at approximately 2m x 3m, this listing comes in a single fixed size rather than the size range some of our other shade cloths offer.

80% is a heavy shading rate, well suited to greenhouse covers, patio awnings and any structure that sits in full, exposed sun for most of the day.

The knitted HDPE structure lets some air move through even at this heavier shading rate, helping to stop heat simply pooling underneath.

UV-resistant yarn is built to withstand a full season of direct sun without the rapid fading and weakening you get from untreated mesh.

A versatile panel that works equally well tied over a greenhouse frame, rigged as an improvised patio awning, or laid over an exposed cold frame.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the size listed as "approximate"?

This particular product is supplied as a single, fixed panel size (around 2m x 3m) rather than in the range of exact sizes some of our other shade cloths offer, so please treat the dimension as approximate and check it suits your structure before ordering.

Is 80% shading suitable for a greenhouse in summer?

Yes, 80% is a heavy shading rate well suited to greenhouses that get strong, direct sun for most of the day and are prone to overheating.

Can I use this as a patio awning?

Yes, rigged with rope or ties over a frame, pergola or between fixed points, it works well as an improvised awning giving strong shade over a seating area.

How does 80% compare to the 90% shade cloths you sell?

80% lets through a little more light than 90%, so it suits crops or spaces that want strong shading but not quite the heaviest rate in the range.

Does this panel have grommets for fixing?

This listing is the plain knitted shade cloth without reinforced grommets; use ties, clips or by wrapping and tying the edge itself when fixing it to a frame.

Will it stand up to a full UK summer outdoors?

The UV-resistant HDPE construction is designed for a full season of outdoor use; taking it down and storing it dry over winter will extend its working life across several seasons.

Can I cut this cloth down if my structure is smaller?

Yes, it cuts cleanly with scissors or a utility knife if you need a smaller panel than the supplied size.

How Much Shade Cloth Do I Need?

4 min read ShadeGuard Netting

Shade cloth is sold by shading percentage, and choosing the right one makes a real difference to how your plants perform. Here is how to think about it for greenhouse covers, patio awnings and exposed cold frames.

What the percentage actually means

The percentage on a shade cloth is roughly how much direct sunlight it blocks. A 30% cloth still lets most light through with only mild protection from the harshest sun. A 90% cloth blocks the great majority of direct light, useful for shade-loving plants or brutally hot conditions, but too heavy for most fruiting vegetables.

This product: 80% shading

At 80%, this cloth is suited to greenhouse covers, patio awnings and exposed cold frames. It sits at the heavier end of the range, best suited to shade-loving plants, very hot or exposed spots, or simply making an outdoor space usable at midday.

Matching shade rate to crop

As a rough guide: leafy salad crops and seedlings often prefer lighter shading (30-40%) so they keep strong light levels. Tomatoes, cucumbers and general greenhouse crops commonly do well under 40-55% through the hottest weeks. Shade-tolerant ornamentals, ferns and anything struggling in a very hot, exposed spot often benefit from 70-90%.

Fitting shade cloth well

Drape or tension the cloth clear of the leaves rather than resting directly on the plants, using a frame, hoops or the structure itself. Leave enough slack that air can still circulate underneath, since shade cloth manages light and heat, not airflow, and good ventilation still matters for healthy growth.

When to take it down

Most growers fit shade cloth for the hottest stretch of summer and remove it once temperatures ease, since permanent shading through spring and autumn can leave plants short of light when they need it most. Taking it down between uses and storing it dry also extends how many seasons you get from the same panel.
